Structural Calculations

A variety of calculations can be provided by a Chartered Structural Engineer, such as Paul Drinkall, to assist clients in fulfilling their project. A brief can range from a simple beam calculation to a complete structure and involve different materials. Most commonly Paul provides calculations in steelwork, timber, masonry, and concrete e.g. in foundations.

Please contact PDA Consulting, in Egremont, if you require calculations and he will send a questionnaire to assist you in determining what information can be provided by you (without needing an initial visit). Alternatively, Paul can visit the property and discuss the details of your requirements and outline what procedures and information he needs to establish to complete the brief. For more complex schemes it will be necessary to hold meetings to discuss priorities in the delivery of calculations to suit the intended build programme. These will usually involve third parties e.g. Architects, Contractors, M&E Contractors.

Structural Surveys

At PDA Consulting, both partial and full structural surveys can be provided. These surveys produce detailed reports on the structural condition of a property and can be required for mortgages.

Paul will always visit the property himself and take photographs to make a thorough assessment. Initial visits to domestic clients are free and Paul will take a brief look at what it entails, to give the client an idea of the cost. An assessment time can then be agreed. After the assessment the report is then provided within 7 days (often quicker).

Please be aware that Paul cannot not move, lift, open up, or perform any other physical action as part of the inspection unless the client has specific authority to request such actions. The reports are limited to visual inspections only. Any opening up of the structure will involve additional costs and may require the presence of a builder to assist.

Partial Structural Inspection

A partial structural inspection report is usually requested by a valuer or surveyor following their inspection of the property for mortgage purposes. It relates to specific defects for which the opinion of a Chartered Structural Engineer is required.

Once instructed, Paul will make arrangements to visit the property, inspect the specified defects, and produce a short report. This details the problem inspected, and includes an opinion as to cause and structural significance, together with recommendations for further investigations, if necessary, together with any remedial works considered appropriate.

Full Structural Inspection

This is similar to the partial inspection but covers the complete property and is usually recommended by valuers, surveyors or legal representatives where the overall structural condition of a property causes concern, and a Structural Engineer's opinion is required concerning the condition of the structure prior to purchase.

Paul will make arrangements to visit the property and inspect both externally and internally. A report will then be produced detailing any observed problems, with an opinion as to the cause and structural significance. The report contains recommendations for further investigations, if necessary, together with recommendations for remedial works.
